The Tech Savvy & Eco Friendly for Desis: Stop Wasting!

Growing up as a South Asian, you don’t really hear much about being eco-friendly, green, or even recycling.  I remember it took my mother about fifteen years before she realized that recycling was easy to do, and pretty necessary for the environment.

Coming from a heritage that is all about diyas and mother earth, I found it hard to believe we cannot assimilate in the eco-friendly world.  In that spirit, here a few recommendations for quick-eco friendly fixes for your life!

IKEA solar desk lamp:  Looking for a solar-powered desk lamp? Go to IKEA.  They also have the LED lights that consume 70% less energy than normal light bulbs.  Not only are these lamps eco-friendly, they are also stylish and come in every color of the Skittle rainbow.

Belkin’s Conserve Surge Protector:  Phantom power is the standby power used when you keep your appliances plugged in after you’re done using them.   This “phantom” is estimated to take up as much as 15% of your overall energy use.  Eliminate your phantom by turning to this Belkin surge protector.  It comes with a remote so that you can turn off the surge protector when you’re no longer using your appliances.

The SodaStream:   The soda stream is a personal carbonator that makes your own personal-sized fizzy water in your own home.  This saves numerous plastic bottles from ending up in the landfill and you also spare the energy used to synthesize and transport the bottles to your local supermarket.

The Snuggie!:  Turn down the heat in the Winter, and in the Spring, wear it in the cooler nights.  While the Snuggie may not be your first choice, I’m throwing it out there as an option.  If you’re not into it, a fleece blanket, throw, or even sweater will do the job!

Now go get GREEN!!
