Sun Spots – How to Deal

Summer is here, and it’s time to hit the beach! It’s time to wear those cute sun dresses you had hidden in the back of your closet, and times to bring out the shorts! It’s time to lay in the sun and just relax.  Except for those little things that come in the way… Sun Spots to be exact.

What are sunspots?

Sun spots are darker patches of skin that occur due to the melanoma (what makes your skin color the color is it) on the epidermis (the outermost layer of your skin.) getting darker in certain area to protect the skin from the sun’s UV rays.

Are they permanent?

Some forms of sun spots are. However most of the time, if treated right away, they can go away. You must see a dermatologist to get a prescription ointment to put on the sun spots to help with the healing process. Also, make an appointment right away if you notice any change in the coloration of your skin and the size and texture of this discoloration as well. Only a specialist can diagnose you and proceed with proper treatment.

Can I avoid sunspots?

Absolutely.  When heading out under the sun, remember, SUNSCREEN is your best friend. Apply sunscreen regularly. Some moisturizers now, have SPF 15 in them. The higher the SPF, the better you are protected against the sun. Wearing hats, and light colors can also help you avoid the damaging rays the sun has. And make sure you don’t sit out under the sun too long without water. Hydration is also very important in keeping your skin fresh and clean.

Have fun this summer, but be careful. We all love olive tanned skin, but make sure you are protected first.
